Percussionist Ms. Candy Chiu "is a fierce player with a very dramatic approach to performance and a theatrical flair,” said Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Lang. Ms. Chiu has performed at many prestigious venues throughout the U.S. and Asia, including Carnegie Hall, Kennedy Center, and Galapagos Art Space. With a deep passion in chamber music, she has performed with many world class musicians, such as violinist Philip Setzer of Emerson String Quartet and early music virtuoso Mark Cudek. Ms. Chiu also actively commissions new works and has given numerous premiere performances including works by Lukas Ligeti, David Kechley, and Andy Akiho.
Ms. Chiu received her master of music degree from Yale School of Music and her bachelor of music degree from Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University, where she studied with Robert van Sice. She believes that finding each student's unique approach is the key to unlocking their passion and musical voice. The positive and nurturing environment at Areté Music Academy allows her to place each student's musical potential at their fingertips.
Ms. Chiu has taught percussion, piano, and ear training classes to students of all levels and all ages at various institutions. In addition to Areté Music Academy, she also teaches at Darien High School and Whitby School in Greenwich, CT. She also has taught ear training as an assistant at the Yale School of Music.
